Powering Microsoft’s latest operating system is a Core i7 chip from Intel’s latest series, integrated Intel Xe graphics, and an ample 16GB of RAM. Acer may like to highlight the somewhat easier upgradability of the Vero, but these generous entry-level specs mean you probably don’t need to. The build quality isn’t great: the laptop’s underside flexes, there’s too much movement in the wrist-rest and the display twists too easily. Half the time it fails to recognise your finger, providing the not-so-smart login experience that was typical of Windows laptops from a few years ago.

In an undemanding video run-down test it lasted six hours 56 minutes, but in general, light involving writing documents with a little web browsing use we found it could drop to just below five hours. Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it — contracts that no one actually reads. None of these are horrifying to see on a budget laptop — but laptops that are built cheaply tend not to last as long as nicer ones, and a laptop you need to replace quickly is not environmentally friendly. The 14 and 15-inch FHD IPS displays look brilliant, with Acer suite of technologies designed to make your experience perfect at every turn.PCMark 10's Full System Drive storage subtest, on the other hand, seemed to give the Acer Aspire Vero the most trouble.

Acer also notes that the Vero is held together with standard screws, which means you can use a Philips Head screwdriver to pry the thing apart and upgrade it (as opposed to some other types of screws, which require more specialized tools). Using the GFXBench tests, we can quantify the results and see the average frames per second (FPS) of a theoretical game running at 1080p and 1440p. You won’t need to carry a dongle in your laptop bag with the Aspire Vero; it features both USB Type-A and Type-C ports.
