The Legion’s keyboard is robust and crisp, with a fast typing action and a numberpad – it’s well built for gaming workloads. The Alienware has a slightly sharper typing action, but there’s little to choose between the two. You’ll only get something that feels significantly weightier if you buy a notebook with low-profile mechanical hardware or if you opt for the Asus and its 2mm of travel. The touchpad itself feels smooth to the touch, without any friction when scrolling up and down. There’s little to no residue left over from your touch, and it is an appropriate size in height and width at 4.7 x 3-inches. Audio on the Lenovo Legion 7 The wattage provided by the charger allows for peak gaming when powered on, but the battery life can be disappointing when unplugged, especially when gaming or doing other intensive tasks. But that's not to say unplugged longevity is bad for a gaming laptop. On our battery test, which involves streaming video, browsing the web, and running OpenGL tests over Wi-Fi, all with the display at 150 nits of brightness, the Legion 7 ran for 4 hours and 39 minutes. Lenovo equipped this Legion 7 with an Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080 with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, alongside an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX, which is an impressive combination. Every competitor mentioned here also sports an RTX 3080, except for the Razer Blade 15, which has a 3070 with 8GB GDDR6 VRAM.

The AMD-powered Lenovo Legion 7 is a top-notch gaming laptop for enthusiasts who want next-generation gaming in a mobile form factor. The RGB-powered laptop screams gaming in every way through its well-thought-out design, from the surrounding lights and keycaps to its well-placed vents and speakers. On Shadow of the Tomb Raider (highest settings, 1080p), the Legion 7 hit 97 frames per second during the benchmark at native resolution. This beats out the Alienware x17 and the Razer Blade 15 ’s 77 and 80 fps . However, the MSI GE76 Raider outperformed the Legion 7 at 106 fps. At its native 2560 x 1600, the Legion benchmarked at 71 fps, more than Razer Blade 15’s 54 fps at 1440p.
The Lenovo Legion 7’s Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 has a generous 165W power limit and it’s the beefier 16GB version of the GPU. It also features an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with eight cores and a top speed of 4.4GHz. The Legion has 16GB of DDR4 memory and a 1TB Samsung SSD that produces middling read and write speeds of 3576MB/sec and 3013MB/sec. There’s little between the RTX 3080 and the Asus’ RTX 3070 Ti. Though audible while gaming, the noise is ultimately just a lot of air passing through the vents. There is little to no fan noise during general use. But can it deliver the goods with real-time performance? After spending over a week with the laptop, here re my thoughts. Design and Keyboard I used a Phillips head screwdriver to take out ten screws from the bottom cover of the laptop: four screws along the top, four screws at the bottom, and two screws on either side. I also needed a pry tool to fully unlatch the bottom panel from the rest of the laptop, but did just fine using an expired credit card instead.
For Far Cry New Dawn under ultra presets, the Lenovo Legion 7 hit 91 fps at 1080p and 82 fps at 1600p. Meanwhile, the Alienware x17 hit 94 fps on 1080p and 60 fps in 4K. The Razer Blade hit 93 fps at 1080p and 82 fps in 4K. At 1080p, the Raider had the best performance, tapping out at 99 fps. WQXGA (2560 x 1600) IPS, 500 nits, 16:10 aspect ratio, 165Hz (3ms response time), 100% sRGB, up to VESA DisplayHDR™ 400 Certified, Dolby Vision ® support, AMD FreeSync™ Premium, TÜV Rheinland ® certified Storage speed proved to be good rather than great, with the Samsung SSD returning sequential read and write speeds of 3,126MB/s and 2,648MB/s respectively. The Asus M16 has it well beaten, recording speeds of 5,536 and 4,325MB/s, though the Legion 7’s speeds are still in line with other high-spec machines we’ve reviewed recently.
The Lenovo Legion 5’s big brother is a truly outstanding gaming machine
The Legion's fans aren't quiet, but the AMD model's seem to be better behaved than the Intel machine's, with less peak noise. Gaming with this laptop in a family room shouldn't create a disturbance. Productivity and Content Creation Tests The Legion tied with the Raider at 77 fps running Red Dead Redemption 2 at medium settings in 1080p, behind the Alienware x17’s 81 fps. At 2560 x 1600, however, the Legion stands tall at 56 fps, ahead of the Razer Blade 15’s 44 fps at 1440p.
Outside of the usual preinstalled apps like TikTok and Spotify, the handiest app is Lenovo Vantage Vantage has multiple settings to customize the laptop, including different performance modes depending on if you want silence or full-blown power. Portability isn’t a strong suit, but this mobile gaming PC is otherwise hard to fault. The Lenovo Legion 7 Gen 7 earns a well-deserved Editors' Choice award among high-end, 16-inch gaming laptops as the Gen 6 model did before it. We’ve boosted our rating by half a star for now including a fingerprint reader, USB 4 ports, and a sharper 1080p webcam. My initial battery rundown test drained the Legion 7’s 78Wh cell in just 3hrs 25mins, which is absolutely dire. However, I then realised that the integrated AMD Vega GPU was turned off and with it Nvidia’s Optimus graphics switching system.
